For many coffee lovers, “organic” signals more than just a label – it reflects a deeper commitment to quality, sustainability and care for the environment. At Horsham Coffee Roaster, we understand the importance of these values, and while we’ve chosen to step away from formal organic certification, we still prioritise sourcing coffees from growers who align with many of the principles organic certification represents.
Let’s break down what defines organic coffee, why it matters, and how our sourcing practices reflect those same ideals.

1. Grown Without Synthetic Pesticides or Fertilisers
One of the key criteria for organic coffee is that it’s grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, protecting both the environment and the health of farmers. This reduces chemical runoff into local water supplies and preserves soil health over time.
Our Approach:
Many of the farms we work with rely on natural pest management and composting techniques, fostering healthy ecosystems and resilient crops without the need for chemical intervention.

2. Biodiversity and Soil Health
Organic farms often prioritise biodiversity, using shade-grown methods, crop rotation, and intercropping to maintain soil fertility and create balanced environments for coffee plants to thrive.
Our Approach:
Many of our partner farms use shade-growing techniques, which not only promote biodiversity but also enhance the complexity of flavours in the cup. These farms view the land as a resource to nurture, not exploit, aligning with the Soil Association’s emphasis on sustainable land management.

3. Protecting Waterways and Wildlife
Organic certification often includes measures to prevent water pollution and protect nearby wildlife. This might involve creating buffer zones around water sources and planting native species to encourage pollinators.
Our Approach:
We prioritise working with producers who engage in responsible water management and forest preservation. We also partner with with OneTreePlanted to regularly contribute to tree planting programmes in Rwanda.

4. Fair Wages and Ethical Practices
While fair trade and organic certification are separate, there’s often overlap in their principles. Organic farms are more likely to engage in ethical labour practices, ensuring fair wages and community investment.
Our Approach:
We foster direct relationships with many of our producers, paying premiums for high-quality coffee. This creates stability for farmers and ensures they can continue using sustainable, responsible farming methods – certification or not.

5. Chemical-Free Decaffeination
When it comes to decaf coffee, organic certification mandates chemical-free processes like Swiss Water or CO2 decaffeination, preserving the integrity of the beans.
Our Approach:
We exclusively source decaf coffee processed through chemical-free decaffeination methods, such as Swiss Water, Mountain Water or Sugarcane methods.
Our Approach to Sourcing Coffee
While organic certification provides an excellent framework, many smallholder farmers face barriers – not in how they grow coffee, but in the administrative costs and paperwork involved. We continue to support producers whose values align with organic principles, allowing them to focus on what they do best: growing exceptional coffee.
Our commitment to sustainability, quality, and transparency is as steadfast as ever – and we remain dedicated to bringing you coffee that reflects the highest environmental and ethical standards.
